After her father's death, Charlotte Hargreaves discovers that she must sell the family farm, Deepdale Manor, to pay the death duties. James Thornton has a good eye for business and can see the benefits of buying the farm for the land it stands on. When he arrives to view the property, Charlie sees him as the enemy. Yet she finds herself attracted to him, and it takes all her strength to remain free to oppose his plans.
