As concerns grow in nineteenth century Whitehall about Russian plans to challenge England's possession of India, the British Intelligence Service sends Captain Richard Eldridge to the unmapped High Pamir mountains near the Russian border to investigate the murder of a fellow officer and retrieve the information he was carrying. When Richard is caught in a blizzard, Georgina Larssen, a striking red-haired Englishwoman working in a remote medical mission in Chinese Turkestan, saves his life. With her help, Richard must discover the motive that lies behind the murder and unravel the secrets that are waiting in the legendary cave of the Golden Pagoda.
