Freelance writer Randall Anthony watches a news bulletin. Two convicts have murdered a US Marshall and wounded another. It catches his attention because it happens two blocks from his apartment. Bill Jefferies, an expert tracker, is called in to help find them. At Colorado State Police Headquarters, Anthony learns that Jefferies and his K9 partner found the convicts in a few hours. After a brief firefight, the convicts surrendered. Anthony gets his story. He sees a bigger story: Bill Jefferies and his K9 partner. He calls Jefferies for an interview. Jefferies turns him down. Later, Jefferies changes his mind and asks Anthony to come to Minnesota. Jefferies asks Anthony, "What part of the story do you want?" "I want your whole story. Anthony learns Jefferies partner is a wild timber wolf that finds the people by searching the memory of other animals. The wolf is telepathic, and so is Jefferies.
