The Blackgloom Bounty

(2006)
A novel by

The Blackgloom Bounty is a classic tale of the triumph of good over evil. Kruzurk Makshare, as a young magician's apprentice, encountered the arch-typical villain, Seed of Cerberus, who was studying with Kruzurk under the master magician, Merlin. While trying to stop the Seed from stealing Merlin's tools of making, Kruzurk, or the Boozer, as he is known early in the story, is cursed for life by the vindictive Seed.

Despite his horribly disfigured face and the agonizing curse, Kruzurk retains his values as a person and a true magician. He disdains the use of sorcery, and eventually is chosen by the spirit of Merlin to bring down the Seed. Merlin gives Kruzurk the tools he needs to take on the Seed, but Kruzurk must first devise a way to get into the Seed's impregnable fortress at Blackgloom and overcome him without the use of sorcery.

Kruzurk determines to accomplish this with a clever ruse involving a young highlander, Daynin McKinnon, who is unaware of his role in the great deception. From the outset of the story, Daynin is torn between his desire to seek riches with which to rebuild his ancestral home and his duty to his grandfather Ean. Desire wins out, temporarily, leading Daynin on a hair-raising adventure where he meets and falls in love with the beautiful and cunning Sabritha Kilcullen. Together, they are dragged into Kruzurk's plot to bring the Seed down. Along the way, others join them in the crusade, also unaware of the part they are to play in a nightmare of whirlwind escapades that many will not survive.

Ultimately, the Seed is destroyed, leaving Daynin, Sabritha and Kruzurk Makshare to divide the spoils left in the ruins of Blackgloom. This Blackgloom Bounty then becomes the focal point of the story, as Daynin must overcome a host of almost insurmountable enemies, objects and circumstances to return the bounty and Sabritha to his clan's ancestral home. There, he hopes to rebuild the keep, kindle a romance with Sabritha and hold his ground against all comers.

But first, a great chase, an even greater escape and a tremendous running battle ensues, stretching across most of Scotland and the high seas and ending at the walls of Kinloch Keep. At every turn, Daynin is threatened with the loss of the bounty, his dreams and the future of his clan. He grows in character, capability and cunning by overcoming every hindrance, all the while gathering a cadre of compatriots, both mortal and mystic, who ultimately help the boy reach his goals. The end of THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY sets the stage for episode two, THE REGENTS OF RHUM (Sept '06).
