For Old Times' Sake

(2000)
A novel by

For Old Times' Sake is a nostalgic, contemporary love story based in the Pacific Northwest, about young love gone awry, survival, second chances, forgiveness, and new beginnings.

Elaine Webster is a 45-year-old professor at Portland State University and a breast cancer survivor. She has been married for 15 years but has ignored underlying tensions in the marriage. These come into greater focus when she receives a phone call from a TV talk show. Her first love and college sweetheart, Glen Harper, has asked the show to find her as part of a “reuniting college sweethearts” program they plan to do.

Elaine had not seen Glen in 25 years—not since he inexplicably broke off their engagement, leaving her devastated. Though wary, Elaine agrees to appear on the show. She had not counted on Glen's determination to “make things right,” and her lingering feelings for him.

Glen is a 46-year-old economist who is divorced and living in Seattle. A recovering alcoholic, he seeks out his first love for old times' sake, stirring up memories. After reuniting on the show, they begin corresponding by e-mail, leading to discovery, rediscovery, passion, and the bridging of 25 years lost in time, distance, and regrets.
