Island of Ashes : The Fire That Killed Key West

A novel by

The devastation of Key West by fire, intensified by gale-force winds, is a tragedy of monstrous proportions. Whether it is an accident or arson is a key question.

Noah Pound, a fireman, battling the firestorm and protecting Amy, his sweetheart, has his hands full. Steve Messori, Noah's friend, suddenly and mysteriously "leaves" the story, then just as mysteriously, reappears. When the fire seems unstoppable, Fire Chief Alonso Cosa, at his wit's end, takes some drastic last-hope measures. Because the fire started at the home of Marc Hegelmann, a developer, he becomes a dominating character. The story's counter plot has Tom Winfield, a crafty and ambitious cinematographer, shooting the fire in Key West, and doing things that encourage the blaze. Lending the story plenty of grit and excitement is the explicit action and ingenious ways 65 firemen struggle against horrendous odds to save Duval Street, the hub of this legendary Old Island. But most compelling of all is the web of intrigue, deception, and conflict of agendas that give the story its implicit, double punch. In tragedy there is some hope. Through it all, Noah and Amy discover a depth of love they had never felt before.
