The Silver Devils

A novel by

"Argile led the Silver Devils into the rift, the other two fleets already inside, swallowed by the rolling lightning and white storms. He had crossed time before, and had not seen it, and was surprised to know that it looked like this."

So Richard Argile takes his 22nd century soldiers through time, fighting an interstellar war 300 years into their future. With a distinctly British flavour, this massive 700-page debut by Richard Trueman is widescreen space opera in the lineage of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers and Ron L. Hubbard's Battlefield Earth. Mankind expands beyond the solar system, subjugating alien races until it comes into apocalyptic conflict with the green-skinned Gargarlians. While there may be some influence from the scale of Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn Trilogy, the real sensibility is of the Golden Age pulps revisited, a big, bold slice of militaristic SF wrapped a retro-1940's vision of the future. Here is a rip-roaring yarn of honour and duty, of valiant men on daring missions fighting great battles against desperate odds, of death, danger, intrigue and betrayal, underpinned by such trusty SF devices as mysterious organisations with enigmatic agendas, time travel, hyperspace and galactic empires. A parallel might be drawn with Joe Haldeman's The Forever War, and while The Silver Devils is not in that league, Trueman delivers some barnstorming set-pieces and has the narrative skill to keep the pages turning. It should keep lovers of old-fashioned SF happily entertained for many hours. --Gary S. Dalkin
