After a six-year absence, Vince Velardi returns with his wife to their hometown to attend the funeral of a childhood friend, Nick Hartley, who was discovered dead, an apparent suicide. But inconsistencies abound surrounding his death and Vince begins to wonder--was Hartley murdered? Or was he merely reenacting a boyhood scene on the same lake where he drowned twenty years earlier and was resuscitated, a victim of a strange and tragic miracle? Complications ensue when Vince meets Kip Bender, an old acquaintance from high school whose life, and face, were changed by a chemistry experiment gone terribly wrong. Responsible for the accident, Vince now needs the help of Bender to unravel his friend's mysterious life and death--a life that includes the betrayal of Bender's own criminal ties. Bender is convinced that Hartley faked his death in a move reminiscent of an old Houdini escape. Did Vince unwittingly assist his friend's killer, or is Bender merely uncovering a version of Hartley that he never knew existed?
