Broadsides in the War of Ideas

A non fiction book by

When the U.S. went to war with Spain to enforce the Monroe Doctrine, it did not fool around. The Spanish Atlantic and Pacific Squadrons were completely destroyed. "Don't cheer, boys, the poor devils are dying," shouted Captain John Woodward Philip, of the U.S. battleship Texas, during the Battle of Santiago Bay, Cuba, July 1898, of Spanish sailors aboard their burning vessels or in the water swimming for their lives.
I am naturally reluctant to check my enthusiasm for the defeats or demises of the devils I assault in this volume of commentaries and essays. The initial success of Running Out My Guns prompted me to collect into another volume a further batch of my commentaries and essays. There are plenty more where these came from, for they represent over two decades of shouting in the wind, or raising the alarm, or emulating Paul Revere on the steed of freedom of speech: "To Arms! To Arms! The Socialists are coming! The Looters are coming! Islam is coming! The Nihilists are coming!" There is a certain pleasure to be had from raking the hull, masts, rigging and crew of an enemy warship with the best gunnery at hand, to disable the vessel and see it sink.
Again, this volume of "observations" represents a small fraction of my nonfiction efforts over the last twenty years, and focuses chiefly on what I have produced and seen published in one form or another since 2001. Most of these pieces appeared originally on Rule of Reason, the blog site of The Center for the Advancement of Capitalism, and later on, on The Dougout and Family Security Matters. They have been picked up by or linked to numerous other Internet venues, here and abroad.

And now that Congress has passed legislation which could arguably quash all such speech and mandate commensurate punishment, and now also that our government may deem all such freedom of speech as an incitement to "violence," together with the exacerbating and infuriating fact that all blog sites are now being monitored by the Department of Homeland Security (how Nazi-sounding that name is!) in search of "violence-provoking" statements made by bloggers or their readers, it is imperative that these commentaries be broadcast in the widest possible manner. We have not yet "Progressed" (as in Progressive ideology) to book-burnings or an American Kristallnacht, but we are inching towards it - by default, a default sired by ignorance, practiced and pragmatic evasion, and a pronounced hostility to freedom.

Long Live Lady Liberty.
