Hang the Sheriff High

(2005)
A novel by

After twenty years as sheriff of Serenity, Bill Mitchell is locked up in his own jail convicted of robbery and murder. As the date of execution approaches, men flock to see him die. Among them is a young newspaperman named William Palmer, scarred and embittered, a stranger supposedly looking for a story but with reasons of his own to wish Mitchell dead. Searching for the truth, he joins in a bid to snatch the sheriff from the gallows, abandoning the pen for more deadly weapons. With the savage range war Mitchell had been holding at bay about to blaze into life, Palmer now risks violent death and the loss of his new love in a desperate race to bring peace and justice back to Serenity.
