At Risk of Being a Fool

At Risk of Being a Fool

A novel by

Jeanie McCoy is a teacher, a wife, a sister, and a mother. The only problems are that she's retired, her husband doesn't remember her name, her sister is in Germany, and her two sons are on opposite coasts. Jeanie takes pride in her cheerful self-sufficiency. Her Puckish sense of humor is her strongest weapon.

Jeanie works part-time job at a GED program for high risk youth, spends hours every day at her husband's memory loss facility, and sends chatty, humorous e-mails to her family. Her students are wary of her. Every one of them has a criminal record. They've got secrets of their own, and no do-gooder is going to get in their way.

A rash of pipe bombs appears in the area. Police suspicions rapidly zero in on her students. Two of them directly linked to the bombs. Jeanie worries about them, all the more as she stumbles over their secrets. Deep in her own heart, she clings to irrational belief of every teacher ever born: "MY kids wouldn't do that! Not MY kids."

But what if one of them DID?

"...Cottrell has a feel for realistic dialogue and the rare ability to make adolescent characters complex and interesting. She is also rapidly mastering the language of evil. That is, she knows how to get into the minds of people who are not exactly peaceful. "At Risk of Being a Fool" is a powerhouse book."
~ Dan Hays, Statesman Journal

"AT RISK OF BEING A FOOL is a fine amateur sleuth mystery complex, mesmerizing and entertaining"
Harriet Klausner, Reviewer

"Cottrell successfully blends a complex mystery with social commentary on troubled teens and the pain of Parkinson's. McCoy is a sympathetic character who, empowered by the empathy one wishes to see in all teachers, struggles against despair and loneliness by seeing to the needs of her students. The teenagers are as complicated as the plot, scary yet likeable, with not a cardboard stereotype among them. A commendable first mystery."
- Mary Welk, Mystery Scene Magazine

"I heartily recommend Jeanette Cottrell's AT RISK OF BEING A FOOL. It's a terrific book. The characters are well-drawn and the reader hopes for the best for them. It is a very well-written, interesting story, and the subject matter ought to be discussed. Rehabilitation is wonderful when it works and if it doesn't? Do good end results outweigh the bad? Read Ms. Cottrell's book and decide for yourselves." ~--Jaye Dee Tyrack, Reviewer, Gotta Write Network
