Dublin Monday 5.20 p.m. They got stuck again in Dame Street. Lines of cars crawled both ways, and people spilled off the pavements, rushing for buses or trains.A little boy in the next car flattened his nose on the window. She pulled a face, and he jumped about in delight. She pulled up the corners of her eyes, and stuck her front teeth down over her lower lip, like the heathen Chinee. He hit his father on the head and pointed at her ecstatically.
"Oh, grow up! For God's sake!" Brian stared fixedly ahead and tapped the top of the wheel with his short, clean fingernails. She gave up the idea of appearing inscrutable like Fu Manchu's daughter, and fiddled with her split-ends. Her fairish hair was shoulder-length, but stringy from too much washing-up liquid. The little boy pawed frantically at his window, and quickly she did her Godzilla imitation at him. His line jolted away, and a woman in another car stared at her
