When Phillip dies, he awakens into the most marvelous of Heavens; a serene, lush island that he alone inhabits. Centerpiece is a classic Tudor mansion, complete with swimming pool, golf course, horses and everything else he's ever wanted in life. It's perfect... for a while.

In life Phillip was a private person. A nice fellow who basically liked people but chose to like them from afar. He brings these characteristics with him to Heaven and are part of what he must deal with as he tries to unravel the riddle that is Heaven.

Learning is a big part of Phillip's Heaven, which he also discovers is quite personal. Questions assail him, from what he did to deserve such beauty (he'd been a decent person in life but not that decent.)... to the big one; what is the nature of God?

Phillip's quest takes him to a Christian community that also seems perfect; an idyllic little town revolving around it's white, wood, steepled church, hanging on the words of a kindly old reverend... who hasn't had an original thought in decades. It doesn't seem right to Phillip that people in Heaven are still encouraged to have faith, read the scriptures and await the day when the Lord will appear and let them know what's going on. They are on the other side, shouldn't they know something?

As frustrating as the community is for Phillip, it will always be special to him for it's there that he meets Joyce (Joy) McKinley, who becomes his soul's mate. There is no beauty like a Heaven in bloom which is made even more so when accompanied by one's love. Together they circumnavigate many levels of Heaven.

Phillip is driven by his need to understand. Joy wishes to comprehend a spiritual moment she'd had in life with Christ. Had it been real? Was he? They mirror each others ascent through Heaven, being led to the same places for different reasons.

They are relieved when they arrive at a community where all races and religions are represented. They never felt segregation of any sort belonged in Heaven. They learn that religions are man made but can be affective for the various cultures they serve. None is the way to God, but many can be a way... And they continue on.

It is a beautiful, wonderful experience for them both. Their last conscience thoughts are of Heaven, which seems to consist of three wishes;

The first was to have anything they wanted.

The second was to do what they thought God wanted.

The third wish... was not to wish anymore.
