Long Stem Rose

Long Stem Rose

(1995)
A novel by

The old landlord is dead, his tenants have looted the
chateau; the heir and his beautiful Irish wife Helene
are installed in the Big House in Brittany with their
modern pine furniture, their revolting teenage children
and Tante Ruby, the self-appointed matriarch who
functions on monumental snobbery and a succession
of pretty toy-boys.
While Helene daydreams the summer away to an old
Leonard Cohen tape, life goes on around her as her
family, neighbours and the xenophobic villagers
prepare, variously, for the comedy, tragedy and farce
that will be their Bastille Day celebrations, eventually
coming to terms in their individual ways with the
realities of end-of-century Europe.
