Sally Wister's Journal

A novel by

Sally Wister's Journal

Sixteen-year-old Sally Wister fled with her life, in late September 1777, when the British Army marched into Philadelphia to occupy William Penn's holy city as their winter quarters.

Sally fled to her aunt's house across the Schuylkill River and into Bucks County to wait out the war. The American Patriot Army was also in need of winter quarters. At her aunt's house, she met 19-year-old Major William "John" Stoddert, a rich, handsome, and charming Maryland gentleman, with a 500-acre plantation on the Eastern Shore of the Cheasapeake Bay.

They fall in love despite the huge obstacles in their way. In 1718, the Quaker founder, William Penn freed his slaves. The Quakers took this as a sign and have held no slaves since, for fifty-nine years! Can an abolitionist Philadelphia Quaker girl find happiness with a Maryland slave holder? Could John give up his plantation to become a Quaker? Or, could Sally turn away from her Quaker religion and principals and become mistress of a plantation?

Based upon the real Sally Wister, and the real journal she kept during the Revolutionary War, 'Sally Wister's Journal' shows the deep divide between Slave states and Free states, which was already splitting the young republic in two, just eighteen months since the Declaration of Independence was signed.

'Sally Wister's Journal' is a clean romance, in the young adult fiction and romantic historical tags.

Lynda Durrant has published eight award-winning historical fiction novels for young adults. 'Sally Wister's Journal' is in that nexus between romantic historical and young adult, coming-of-age historic fiction.
