When young Rebecca Mariott, daughter of the local landowner, names smuggler's son Timothy Ryland as responsible for the child she is carrying, she creates a whirlwind of evils. Timothy is thrashed by his father before having a chance to explain that he is in fact not the man responsible. Instead, Timothy promises an accounting between them in the future because his father had accepted his guilt without question. As events threaten them all, both Rebecca and Timothy appear to have little hope of future happiness until the attractive son and daughter of a more powerful family than the Mariotts offer them alternatives.
