Jusu and Mother Earth

A novel by

Widowed at 52, the love of her life suddenly gone and her four grown children happily occupied with lives of their own, Ruth Pedigo believes the best is behind her.
Depressed and discouraged, she is ripe when her long-time pen pal, black Anglican priest Paul Catlett, invited her to visit his remote village in Uganda. Part of his pitch is that his congregation has never seen a white woman. Laughing, she admits she's never been invited to be "Show and Tell."
Friends, family and even the U.S. State Department urge her not to go, citing violent deaths and atrocities perpetrated against white people in rural areas of that African nation; deadly diseases that have no names much less cures, and ongoing wars in and sometimes with neighboring nations.
Feeling fatalistic, Ruth disregards the dire warnings. She will leave Bridger, Oklahoma and confront whatever fate has in store. She calls in a favor and convinces an old friend with a wire service to pay her for sending him features and news stories from Uganda.
She arranges for her younger son to house sit for the initial ninety-days period she will be gone, then packs her bags.
Though she considers herself a coward, Ruth finds the courage to board the airplane in Dallas for the first leg of her adventure, an overseas flight to London. She has no idea that seatmate Jack Standish will turn out to be her best friend and treasured traveling companion or that she will eventually fall in love again--with a land and a culture and, surprisingly, with the very diverse people awaiting her there.
