Called to the murder of a senior surgeon in the grounds of a country hospital, John Charter discovers that his ex-wife, Sophie, is involved in the case. Then she disappears. He ought to retire from the investigation, but he persuades the Assistant Chief Constable to give him forty-eight hours to land his chief suspect. The hospital staff close ranks and Charter wrestles with rumours of medical malpractice by young doctors and of fierce rivalries between colleagues. He works at breakneck speed in the fear that he may never find Sophie alive.
