Of course, that’s what they say, but some gifts are so entirely unexpected...

Maybe it wouldn’t matter to some people, but former chancer Flutter is just out of prison and trying to go straight.

In the thirty years since his birth, Flutter had never seen or heard from his father. Suddenly, out of the blue, he’s been left a house in the old man’s will. Suspicions aroused, he needs to know everything is above board and enlists the help of a local journalist to find out who his father was, and where his money came from.

The discovery that the house is compensation for being in prison makes it clear there’s something distinctly iffy about the whole situation. Then, when a London gangster arrives demanding the return of the house and threatening his life, Flutter’s worst fears are confirmed.

Flutter’s no coward, but he’s only just turned 30. A few days ago, everything was looking rosy. Romance was even a possibility, but now everything’s changed.

If he runs, he could become a hunted man. If he stays, he’ll end up dead.

It’s not much of a choice.
