The Great Wide Open

A Novella by

Cam Alvarez always expected to die alone in the dark.
Clawing his way out of the crime-ridden Housing Blocks of Trans Angeles that had already claimed his family, he grabbed at the only lifeline available: the Fleet Marine Corps Armored Infantry. Fitted with interface jacks, he didn't simply drive the three-meter battlesuit, he became it. It's his weapon, his shield, his security blanket, his way to close himself off from everyone.
Until it's gone, sunken at the bottom of a lake behind enemy lines on a backwards colony world during a failed invasion, leaving him naked and helpless on the featureless, desolate plains, knowing he only has days before the Fleet gives up on the planned liberation of the occupied planet and simply nukes the site from orbit.
When he's found and taken in by resistance fighters, he joins their effort to take out the defense shields around the enemy base and save the colonists and their homes from destruction at the hands of their own fleet.
It's a suicide mission... but at least he'll die among friends.
