Gill Schierhout was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1967. She graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1994 with a Doctorate in Public Health. She has held academic appointments in public health at the University College London, the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand. She now lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband and their two daughters. She has twice been a finalist for the HSBC/SA Pen literary award and was shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African writing in 2008.
