Christine Hammond and her husband Philip have organized a dinner party for Philip’s boss and co-workers. Philip fails to return home from work, and despite the efforts of the guests, they can find no sign of him. Calls to local hospitals result in the news that there were no victims of accidents admitted to hospital and there is no sign of an accident on the road Philip would have driven to get home.
Two friends, Jan and Daniel, stay with Christine as she waits for her husband or for news. Her doctor gave her something to help her sleep, but she dreams her husband stands beside her during the night and tells her he is fine, but also where he has hidden money. Christine finds the money exactly where he said, so is convinced Philip is alive, but there is no other sign or any word until the following day when the police bring bad news.
The police bring the news that Philip’s car went off the road and he had a bad accident. He died in surgery. Christine spends a few days sedated and in a sort of trance, attending the funeral while not feeling part of it. She also believed Philip had visited her the night before, so can’t really be dead.
After the funeral, her friends remind her of everything that happened the night Philip failed to come home. They talk about how things do not add up. The night Philip disappeared there were no skid marks on the road and no car off the road, yet the following day the police say Philip went off the road and died due to the accident. The hospitals say there were no accident victims that night. There are other facts that make no sense too and Christine decides to investigate.

Christine investigates who Philip’s boss is because of the reaction of the police to his name, and she also looks into his colleagues. She finds mention in an article, but only a rumor, that he works as a top-secret government agent. There is no proof, but that is because the people involved in this article died suddenly after the article appeared.
She talks to a top lawyer who gives her advice, including the suggestion she leaves things alone as it might be dangerous, but he also recommends a private investigator when she shows she intends to carry on searching until she has some answers. Christine visits the investigator who feels the events surrounding her husband’s death are strange and agrees to take her case and to let her be involved.

Tim tells Christine about his life as a secret agent, but only in so far as it regarded Philip. He also says that Philip and his co-workers had done terrible things such as torturing and killing innocent women and children for fun. Tim and his colleagues believe Philip was the person who tampered with Tim’s parachute during a mission, causing Tim to plummet to the ground.
Tim discovers many important things during his trip to town, not least that Philip’s death didn’t happen the way it was reported, although he still has no idea what really happened. His ex-boss gives him access to secret files and asks him to find out the truth.
Watching the news Christine learns Carlton Brice, the head of defense was assassinated, but more surprisingly she sees Philip in the crowd as the television cameras pan around the scene.

Christine is so mad at him she punches and kicks him and he falls down. She then ties him up so she can get answers to all the questions she has. Philip admits to killing Carlton Brice and explains the other things she asks.
Christine takes the government to court for ruining her life, and despite difficulties she manages to get her case heard, thanks to the journalist who publishes everything in the hope of keeping her safe. She wins her case and from then on the agencies have to follow stricter rules and answer to a committee.
