For the last three years of the Civil War, Jeff Denfield and Phil Carney had fought side by side for the Southern cause, taking turns saving each other from the consequences of battle-inflamed bravery. In the evenings Phil would talk about his sister and Jeff found himself thinking of her as his girl. Now the war was over and Phil invited Jeff to come home to Texas with him and meet Laura, rather than returning to being a riverboat gambler.
