(The second book in the Spike Tracy Mystery series)
A novel by

"On the whole I'd say that the whole thing is rather ideal - the proverbial house party, a murder, everyone under suspicion, a man of mystery, two lovers... misappropriated funds, threats of disinheritance, cut telephone wires, and strange doings in the dead of night..."

Jennifer Vinton, an orphan about to come of age, returns to the country house of her grandfather and guardian Steven Kester. Jennifer is determined to marry a poor legal student - a match which her guardian bitterly opposes on pain of disinheritance. The arrival of a mysterious stranger suggets that secrets from Kester's past are about to be revealed. But before matters can come to a head, Kester is murdered at the height of a masked ball - brutally stabbed and shoved into his own closet. Luckily for the local police, among the other guests at Kester's house is Spike Tracy - brother of the New York District Attorney, playboy and gifted amateur detective...

Originally published in 1931, this is a vintage murder mystery from the golden age of crime fiction.
