Death by Dark Waters
(2019)(Death in the Lake District)
(The first book in the DCI Satterthwaite series)A novel by Jo Allen
DETECTIVE JUDE SATTERTHWAITE IS A LOCAL BOY, LAKE DISTRICT BORN AND BRED. AND HE WON’T LET ANYONE GET AWAY WITH MURDER ON HIS TURF.
The hottest summer on record. The Lake District is burning. Grass fires rage across the tinder-dry fells, and the police have all but given up chasing whoever is lighting them.
Then a firefighter damping down a blaze above Haweswater stumbles over something in the ruins of a blackened barn. A body. Small, charred, curled against the wall.
Detective Jude''s night off is over.
The victim didn't die in the flames. He was already dead . . . and the fire was meant to erase every trace of him.
Then a second body is found hanging in the woods at Brothers Water . . .
Perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, Peter Robinson, and Martin Edwards.

MEET THE DETECTIVE
Detective Jude Satterthwaite is in his mid-thirties, grey-eyed and serious, he's now policing the fells he walked as a kid. Years back, he discovered his own brother committing a crime and walked him straight into the station. Half the village has called him Judas ever since. He cares too much and compromises too little, a combination that has cost him his girlfriend, his brother's trust and most of his friends. A bit like Marmite, as his CSI puts it. But when danger crops up, he’s the one you want.
THE SETTING
The Lake District is a stunning landscape of high fells and dark waters glinting through the trees. But coppers working the field see straight through the picture-postcard façade and into its murky depths. Beyond the pretty villages and tourist tea shops lie miles of open hillside. The perfect place for bodies to turn up, and for killers to disappear.
