Shane Undere. Local street rat and vagabond. Taken from a life of security and raised in the slums from the time of the Descendence till the day he steals the wrong item. Chased by the Marked—bonded humans with the power to summon great beasts to aid them—he must flee the city he had called home for most of his life. Racing into the wilds has its own set of problems. The Descendants rule the wilds, and they despise humanity.
Left with the choice of capture by Marked, or killed by a Descendant, he makes his choice. Death does not come easy however.
A dying Descendant offers to bond with Shane, starting him on the path of the Marked. Only no one told him that Descendants killed anyone they bonded to. He lives. He heals. And is gifted with elemental controls aligned with his Descendant. He also might have been better off dead. His Descendant has a bone to pick with him about the item he stole. She announces that he just doomed his entire city and if he doesn't get it back, everyone he cares for will be dead.
