It appears that Deputy Sheriff Spider Latham is not going to be able to slide into his new responsibilities gradually. With the sheriff out of town, and a body uncovered in an obscure wash somewhere outside the little Mormon-settled town of Panaca, Nevada, he has his hands full right from the start.
