Carved stone is my love language and I’ve built my life around the study of grotesques and gargoyles. When I trace the clawed curves and weathered wings, I know the intent of the carvings, the duty the creature held on a cathedral roof. What I don’t understand is why the newest guardian figure I’m called to restore feels… wrong. Too perfect. Too alive. Or why the tall, watchful man who owns the statue, and his dark, gothic mansion feel familiar.
An unusual bond forms between us. Desire stirs my blood every time I catch him watching me. Although I’ve never believed in destiny, I sense there’s something I need to discover. About him. About us.

In my realm, I’m supposed to look like the figure transported to this world with me. Monstrous, with jagged wings, a fanged mouth, my body carved for war. I was born different and no magic could cure my smooth skin, flat teeth, or human appearance. Only invisible wings remain to connect me to my past. My true self. Because of this ugliness, I was cast out to live among weak, breakable humans.
I don’t understand why my shame has been placed in this woman’s hands. Or why an invisible tether pulls me toward her. Her voice cracks the stone encasing my heart, and her scent feels like a memory. I’m unable to stray far from her without pain ripping through me.
I was born a guardian, a warrior. She is human. Fragile. Off limits.
I’m beginning to believe my exile may not have been a punishment. Perhaps it was fate.
Because the only thing stronger than the call of home… is the woman who feels like it.
