Evil at Nunnery Manor

(1973)
A novel by

Rachel Coleman, young and shy as well as penniless and homeless, journeys to Nunnery Manor, a remote and shrouded mansion in the north of England, to accept a position as companion to old and kindly Mrs. Westaby. There she meets Richard, the old woman's son, master of the Manor and husband to the semi-invalid Caroline, as stunningly magnificent in appearance as she is cruel in behaviour. Rachel soon notices that their marriage is fraught with a bitterness bordering on hatred, aided in no small measure by Caroline's overt antagonism and closely guarded alliance with her maidservant Michele. The two share secrets that grow in ominous proportion, until rachel and Richard are finally thrown together in a net of terror which mortally threatens them both.
