It's hard enough being the new kid in school, but shy Ruthie Morgenthau is worried about things at home as well. As the child of Holocaust survivors, Ruthie has never been told much about their past, and with her father recently dead she feels more alone than ever. Now she has no one but her mother, who has been silent and withdrawn since her father's death, and her Aunt Sarah, whose main concern is Ruthie's upcoming bat mitzvah.

When Ruthie meets Denise Riley at school, the new friendship helps her forget her problems. Just pretending to be a part of Denise's family makes life at home a bit easier. But when Aunt Sarah is the victim of a frightening threat, Ruthie must do some serious thinking about her responsibility to her own family - and to herself.
