When Duncan, a successful gynecologist, is sentenced to three years in prison for performing an illegal abortion, Frances, his wife, quite naturally turns to his oldest and best friend for legal and financial advice. Bernard is a wealthy bachelor and art collector, charming and sympathetic, and Frances, very much alone, is increasingly attracted to him as a friend and companion. Since Duncan had unhesitatingly appointed him his trustee, Frances sees no reason to doubt him. But evan as she becomes more and more involved emotionally, she begins to suspect that he is a completely unscrupulous man.
