It is the summer of 1945. The war in Europe is over, and all nations are reeling over the death and destruction left behind after the fighting is finished.

Allied soldiers are still in what was, until recently, Occupied Europe, including the Fatherland itself. Some are going home, having been in it from the start; others are supervising the clearing of the rubble by German and other Axis POWs.

Civilians are slowly returning to search for something of their old lives that might have survived. Ships and planes are filling up with freed Allied POWs, the wounded and dependents. Despite the war against Japan still waging, many Americans are checking the points to see whether they will be going home anytime soon.

Kiel is yet another damaged German city. It had been home to the German navy during hostilities. Still, now it was the place where returning German ships were being divided among the victors, with many being sent with their crews to Soviet Russia as part of reparations for the war. Few of these crews would see their homeland again, despite the war being over.

Into this mix comes a solitary young woman.

She joins the line to have her documents checked as she intends to book travel to England and then on to the United States.

The US Army clerk is surprised to find that, although not yet twenty, she is married to an American Air Force Captain. The clerk expected her to be German, and although her German is fluent, she isn’t German by English.

Her papers are all in order, and her quest is successful. She is allocated a double cabin on a steamer due to leave Rotterdam soon, with her husband joining her.

The clerk would be incredibly surprised to discover that this young woman started the war as a young man in school in England, but had been a spy working in Germany and other parts of Occupied Europe since 1943. Her main task was to assist people in escaping from Germany and to get them to the safety of an Allied nation.

There is nothing for her in Germany, the land of her mother. There is nothing for her in Britain, the land of her father. Her eyes are set on the New World, which she intends to enjoy with her husband.

Her story is a mix of secrets and revelations.
