The Joy-Ride and After

(1963)
A collection of stories by

The Joy-Ride and After presents three novellas linked together by certain characters who reappear throughout the volume, and by their variation on the theme of loneliness and insecurity. The first tells what has led up to a young garage-hand 'borrowing' his employer's car, and its disastrous consequences. In the second a betrayed wife loses her memory after an accident, and finds herself on a barge with an old reprobate. The third is about the tribulations of a canteen manager with an inscrutable boss and an extravagant wife. Whether they live in slum tenement or suburban semi-detached, these ordinary people are seen through an imagination to which nothing is ordinary.
