The Squire and the Schoolmistress

Flavia Montague is a teacher by choice, but, tiring of her work in Miss Bredale's academy, she gains employment as a schoolmistress in the village of Brooks. On arrival, Flavia finds that the school has been closed for some months and she hears about the previous teacher, Miss Price, who had been involved in a scandal. Flavia is given welcome assistance in establishing the school by the handsome landowner Paul Wheaton who seems attracted to her. She spends time getting to know two of her pupils, Penelope and Philip, and it becomes clear that Penelope has been ill-treated by her guardian, Sir Lewis Glendenning - a name linked with the notorious Miss Price. Now Flavia must decide if Mr Wheaton's friendship is really genuine. Is Sir Lewis the brute that he appears to be? And what is the truth about the mysterious and scandalous Miss Price?
