He said one word. She cancelled her flight.

Ezra hasn't spoken in eight months. Hasn't shifted in six years. Hasn't trusted anyone since the Institute carved twelve names into his ribs and turned him into something he's spent every day since trying not to be.

Dr. Maren Cole came to Blackwood compound to consult for three months. She was packed, flight booked, ready to leave — until a wolf shifter who hadn't spoken to anyone since April stood in a doorway and said: Stay.

So she stayed.

What follows is five months of coffee on a porch, a chair in the corner of a clinic, seventeen words and then twenty-nine and then more. A wolf learning, one sentence at a time, to spend himself on someone who isn't going anywhere. A surgeon learning that the most precise thing she's ever done is choose to be someone's fixed point.

But Ezra is carrying more than silence. The twelve names. The Institute. A facility in Scotland and a debt he's been running toward for six years.

And the word the wolf has known since day one — the one it's been waiting for him to say.

Mate.
