Mr. Bennet's Death

(2024)
A novel by

In the spring of 1812, Darcy visits Rosings, just as he does every year, but almost as soon as he gets there, he hears that Mr. Bennet has passed away. Anxiety and concern for Elizabeth consume him, and he sets out to discover if she is well, only to be thwarted by Mrs. Collins who bluntly points out his poor behavior in Hertfordshire.

With the help of his cousin, Richard, and his aunt, Lady Matlock, Darcy adjusts his perspective and sets out to woo and marry his heart’s desire, Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

Elizabeth is surprised to see Mr. Darcy in Gracechurch Street when he first arrives at her Uncle's home, but he quickly proves that he only has her happiness in mind...which baffles her. Why would a man so proud and unpleasant suddenly become so pleasant and kind?

Though the title is somber and serious, this Pride and Prejudice variation is about the practical results of Mr. Bennet's passage rather than the sorrow that naturally comes from losing a beloved father. It is perfect for curling up with on a quiet afternoon. It is a quick read of 45,000 words.

A quote from the book:

‘Why?’ asked Elizabeth. She could not fathom why such a proud, disagreeable man as Mr. Darcy would love her with such depth as he had just described and shown.

He shrugged and looked down at the ground. ‘If I said it was because you are beautiful, that would paint me as a shallow creature, though it is not far from the truth. I believe something can be termed beautiful when it gives you a bit of joy, like a sunrise, or an unusual painting, or the sparkling eyes of an intelligent and clever lady. All I can say is that your presence brings me joy, thus you are beautiful, and that is why I love you.’
