A Heifer of the Dawn

(1904)
A novel by

A Heifer Of The Dawn was originally published early in the 20th century. The stories allude to be translations of unrevealed manuscripts. However, these short stories are not directly drawn from any Hindu texts or traditions. F. W. Bain was eventually exposed as a writer of orientalist "flights of imagination." He continued to press on with the series until there were thirteen volumes. This is thus a harmless literary hoax on a par with Bilitis. Which is not to say that these stories don't have their charm, particularly if you like early fantasy writers, such as William Morris or Lord Dunsany. Just don't use them as sources for information about Hindu mythology.

PREFACE INVOCATION THE WAX OF A NEW MOON MANGO PATALI JASMINE A FLOWERLESS DAWN CHAMPAK LOTUS SHRIPHALA SHIRISHA KADAMBA AMARANTH ASHOKA PALASHA SHAMI "First comes Night, and Chaos: and then, out of the black there arises, silently, imperceptibly, irresistibly, the glorious, the blushing, the beautiful, amber-clouded, opal-shredded, amethyst-bedappled Dawn. O Dawn, how I do love thee! how, after a night of blackness and distress, has thy delicious fragrance raised me from the dead, with its colour and its camphor and the nectar touch of its rosy finger, softer than flowers, cooler than sandal-wood. Yes, it is necessary to be a dweller in the East, to taste and understand the religion of the Dawn."
