Defiant Ones: Phillis Wheatley
(2026)(The fourth book in the Defiant Ones series)
A Story by Heather Blanton
History remembers the soldiers. It’s time to remember the women who fought for liberty alongside them.
Before the American Revolution changed a nation, Phillis Wheatley was already discovering that words could become a powerful instrument for freedom.
Taken from her home in West Africa as a child and sold into slavery in Boston, Phillis enters a world where nearly everything familiar has been stripped away. But within the Wheatley household, an extraordinary gift begins to emerge. Phillis learns to read and write with remarkable speed, discovering in poetry a way to wrestle with grief, faith, identity, and the complicated world around her.
As her words begin appearing in newspapers and drawing the attention of some of the most influential figures of the Revolutionary Era, Phillis encounters another battle. A society willing to praise her poetry is not always willing to believe a young enslaved Black woman could have written it.
Yet Phillis refuses to allow others to define the limits of her calling. Her journey takes her from Boston drawing rooms to the literary circles of London, where success brings an unexpected possibility: freedom. Now Phillis must decide what it truly means to be free, where she belongs, and how God might use the gift He has placed within her.
