Vicious lies and scandal cause her to sail away from her beloved Scotland to find a new life, free of misery and heartache. She soon discovers that her youth and beauty can be both a curse and a charm as the men who gather around her seek to tame her adventurous spirit.

Reveling in her newfound freedom, Kyla is loath to settle down or conform to the wishes of Sir Robert McPherson, a wealthy colonial who wants to make her his bride and mistress of his plantation in the Carolinas. But Robert’s conniving sister Kyla is determined that no such union will ever take place. Once again beset by scandal, and after being forced to leave the plantation she joins Robert’s friend, Matthew Kilpatrick on his sea journey to the island of Tortuga. During a confrontation with a Spanish man-of-war Kyla comes face to face with Michael Balfour, a handsome English doctor being held prisoner on the Spanish ship.

Separated from both Matthew and Michael, Kyla is imprisoned by the Spaniards on the island of Hispaniola.
