SYNOPSIS: "Dopey Dan was the name Dan Fowler had been stuck with in his native Clayton, and it was a good name for a circus clown. Going home to investigate the death of the one man in Clayton who had ever been kind to him, Dan encountered the same contempt he remembered from his youth. Nobody expected him to have the courage or the sense to get to the bottom of the mystery the town wanted to keep unsolved. When he did, Dan found himself looking down the business end of a pistol in the hands of a man who'd stop at nothing to keep him from revealing what he knew."
