Isabel Derrington's nerves are raw and her body is racked with pain. Someone wants her dead, she's certain of it, and they nearly succeeded. Although the cryptic notes from an unknown admirer never seemed threatening before, Isabel now fears for her life, and returns to her uncle's home deep in the mountains where she can recuperate and hide from the faceless man who stalks her day and night. But lying in the massive Elizabethan bed at Derrington Manor, Isabel senses a presence. She is not alone. Lord William Ashenhurst is disgruntled at first to find someone occupying his bed, but upon discovering the injured woman's identity his spirit feels a great jolt of joy. His poppet, his little one, the only bright spot in his miserable existence, has returned. But she does not see him in all his ghostly glory as she did when she was a child. So, he invisibly watches over his poppet, keeping her safe from this unknown madman who wishes to do her harm.
