The Jealous God

The jealous god of John Braine's fourth novel is the censorious conscience of a young schoolmaster, Vincent Durgarven. Educated in a severely pious atmosphere, Vincent struggles to fulfill his mother's wish that he become a priest. More the product of duty than conviction, these efforts shatter when Laura, a lovely, black-haired girl, appears in the Charbury Public Library. Vincent's obsession with her soon dominates his life.
