Vivien Butterworth has just retired from teaching. She did not marry until she was forty, and when her husband died twelve years later, she went back to her old career. Now she feels a little dislocated, until the discovery of an old snapshot, along with a picture in a London gallery, fuels her desire to return to Cusio, the Italian village she visited on holiday thirty years before with her friend Elizabeth Grove. When Vivien finally returns to Cusio, her chance meeting with an old acquaintance there will uncover an unsuspected state of affairs.
