Elizabeth Ballard takes a cruise on the M. V. Tangaroa. On the first night of the ten day cruise she becomes aware of a sinister atmosphere in the Grand Salon where Francesca Valli was singing. Kris Angborn, the ship's doctor, is in a relationship with Francesca much to Elizabeth's dismay. But when Fransesca leaps overboard Elizabeth believes it looks less like a suicide and more like murder.
