Going to See Grassy Ella, the young adult classic by award-winning author Kathryn Lance, is a fast-paced comic adventure narrated by 14-year-old Annie West. Annie's 12-year-old sister, Peej, has cancer, and she wants to go to New York to see a faith healer named Graciella, who cures people out of the goodness of her heart. Reluctantly, Annie agrees to go with her on a weekend when their parents will be out of town. The ensuing adventures include a wild chase through the tunnels of Grand Central Station, a major-league baseball game, a mistaken-identity kidnapping, and end with the girls (and "Grassy Ella") helping the police to catch a ring of drug criminals. Peej, who is the hero of the story, finds a path to healing with her doctors' help and Graciella's advice. A story for all ages, "Grassy Ella" was named Recommended Book for Reluctant Young Readers in 1994 by the Young Adult Library Services Association of the ALA.
