For gallantry at Shiloh Major John Willard gained respect in high places. After the Civil War, he was assigned special duty by the president himself which was to take him to the Staked |Plains in Texas. The region was repellent and menacing, a land of death inhabited by Indians and outlaws. Willard had never visited it, nor so far as he could ascertain, would any law-abiding person.
