Nothing could go wrong now… could it?
“I knock on the front door, and a moment later, it opens slowly, revealing Ryan on the other side of the door. I blink at him in panic. Allie said that the party was going to be a surprise for her son, and here I am, spoiling the surprise by holding his cake.
“Hi, Ryan,” I say in an extremely high-pitched voice. “Um, is your mom home? I’m stopping to say hi to her.”
Ryan blinks at me with a surly expression. “I know I’m having a party. I’m seven. I’m not a baby anymore.” He crosses his arms over his chest and fixes me with a look that he thinks is stern. It’s so adorable, especially with his blond hair sticking up. It’s hard to bite back my smile.
I nod seriously. “You are grown up.”
“My mom is at our neighbor’s house a few houses away. I think she’s talking to the cops.”
My heart drops to my stomach. Riley’s house…”
From then on, things go downhill for Katy.
