What can a little dog do when her best friend dies?

Ginger, a cute little Pekinese dog, is pals to the end with her loving elderly owner Margot. But, when Margot dies, relatives dump Ginger at the local dog pound.

The pound is scary. Bad things seem to happen to the helpless dogs and cats stuck in the cages. In self-defense, Ginger begins to snap at people or animals that she sees as threats.

Soon, Anne and Joe Smith, an older couple who recently lost their beloved dog Rosie, visit the pound. The wife is determined to adopt Ginger. At first, Ginger is scared, defensive, and confused. The Smiths leave her outside in Rosie’s old outdoor kennel, surrounded by their tough group of cats, who lord over the property and Ginger.

Ginger seeks acceptance from Mr. Smith and from the cats. As she struggles to find her place in her new home, she sees Anne home alone through the kitchen window. Then Ginger observes something happen that stirs frightening memories of what happened to Margot.

Can Ginger get help for Anne? Can Ginger turn things around in her new home? Can she become part of this new family?
