"A truly great writer steps onto the stage" Daniel Kehlmann
When Anton learns he only has months to live, his first thought is for posterity
A retired widower, he lives a routine existence - visiting the same restaurant every day for lunch, going for walks in the botanical garden, smoking cigarettes he has specially sent to him from Spain and meticulously writing a diary.
But now he is determined to leave his mark. Whether it's by writing, painting or scuplting, something he does in the last year of his life has to stick. Suddenly his life isn't so routine anymore. New friends and acquaintances crowd in and others decide they have something to gain from his quest themselves. But the clock is ticking. And if he gets a taste of success, will he be satisfied, or will he simply thirst for more?
Funny, touching and at times quirkily philosophical, Anton Wants to Stay is a meditation on growing older, loss, the importance of legacy and friendship from the pen of a writer who has captured the world's imagination while still finishing his university studies.
