It is 1861, and after a year of bloodshed, hardship and tears, the end of the Oregon Trail is nearly in sight. But yet again Chris Weaver’s deadly skills are called into play when he prevents the long-suffering settlers from being fleeced by a group of ruthless toll collectors on the Barlow Road. Yet it is from these same men that he then learns all is not well in Oregon City, which unfortunately just happens to be the wagon train’s destination.

Hopelessly unsuited to farming, this fourth Chris Weaver novel sees him take on a job that no one else wants: city marshal. In this role, he soon comes up against Silas Teague, a ruthless saloonkeeper with big ambitions, who will use any means to remove the interfering new lawman. This includes summoning a deadly shootist, Luther Pogue, and his gang of gun thugs from Portland. Yet it is not long before Pogue discovers that this ‘law dog’ is quite possibly the most dangerous man he has ever encountered. It is only professional pride that prevents him from backing off.
And so, the scene is set for a vicious conflict that has shocking consequences for Weaver’s only friend, and which guarantees that just one man will be left standing!
